One night, as you walk to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, you see a flash in the corner of your eye and think not much of it, it was just an illusion.  Occasionally for the next few days you think you see a flash of something running in the dark across the room or hear some strange yet faint sounds coming from the kitchen.  Then, several nights later, as you sit on the porcelain throne taking care of business you see it in plain site, a quick and fast mouse zoom out from under the sink and before you know it is runs face first into your bare feet scaring all reason out of you.  As you walk out, what you thought was the same mouse runs across your foot scary you again and then laying in bed you can hear that pesky mouse running along your mattress’ box spring.  It then hits you, you have a mice problem.
